SUMMARY:Sites of Botanical Knowledge Production
DESCRIPTION:From May 22 to 23\, 2025\, the Botanical Theatre will host the international convention “Sites of Early Modern Botanical Knowledge Production”\, dedicated to exploring the sites of studies and dissemination of botanical knowledge in the modern age. \nThe meeting aims to investigate not only institutional spaces and actors\, such as academic botanical gardens\, but also the lesser-known stories of private botanical gardens\, their promoters and their role in plant knowledge and circulation. \nAttendance is free\, by registration. \nThe convention is an initiative of the DiSSGeA – Department of Historical\, Geographical and Ancient Sciences – in collaboration with the Botanical Garden\, the MoHu Center\, the University of Padua Center for Museums and Dumbarton Oaks. It is organized by Elena Canadelli\, scientific director of the Botanical Museum; Florike Egmond\, historian of science and expert in botanical iconography; and Anatole Tchikine\, curator of historic gardens and architectural historian\, with a specialization on Italy in the Modern Age. \nREGISTRATION  \nCONFERENCE PROGRAM

SUMMARY:Plants\, in the eyes of science
DESCRIPTION:From the first photographic reproductions made for scientific purposes to modern illustrations: microscopy\, infrared\, ultraviolet\, satellite\, and time-lapse images tell the story of contemporary themes\, from climate change to air quality\, from agricultural sustainability to the management of urban greenery and forestry. The photographic section of the exhibition Impronte – Noi e le piante (‘Imprints – We and Plants’) organised by the Botanical Garden of the University of Parma (Parma\, January/March 2024)\, comes to Padova. \nHistorically\, the purpose of botanical illustrations was initially practical and didactic: illustrations were not used to discover the world of plants\, but to educate the medical profession about medicinal plants. The first illustrations were often of a decorative nature\, useless for identifying specific species\, but useful for memorising and studying\, while the focus on biodiversity came later. \nIf botanists once brought illustrators with them into the field\, today researchers welcome visual artists into the laboratory to create scientifically impeccable\, colour-enhanced images. These digital illustrations serve a research and dissemination function\, often ending up on the covers of the most prestigious scientific journals and infusing the objectivity of science with a touch of human flair. Plants\, in the Eyes of Science opens on Thursday 25 April as part of the Risvegli festival and can be visited in the Foyer during the opening hours of the Garden\, included in the entrance fee\, until 6 January 2025. \nImage by Craig P. SUMMARY:Planet Book. The exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Photo: © Jonas Bendiksen / Magnum Photos \n  \nThe Botanical Garden hosts “Planet Book. The exhibition”\, a selection of 100 photographs and 100 significant stories from Planet Book\, the editorial project born from collaboration between Contrasto and the University of Padua. Presented to the public for the first time ever\, the exhibition recounts our dependence on our host planet and at the same time the profound transformations we have inflicted on it. \nThe photographs\, commented by a group of students from the University of Padua\, are grouped according to the four elements employed by ancient philosophers to understand the world: water\, earth\, fire and air. The fifth element is us in all our ambivalence\, capable as we are of admirable creative impetus and destructive impulses. \nOn display\, among others: Sebastião Salgado\, Bruno Barbey\, Jonas Bendiksen\, George Steinmetz\, Frans Lanting\, Thomas Hoepker\, Chris Steele-Perkins\, Matthew Abbott\, Cristina de Middel\, Stefano Dal Pozzolo\, Ian Berry\, Alex Bellini\, Francesco Anselmi\, Antoine d’Agata\, Sim Chi Yin\, Jean Gaumy\, Paolo Pellegrin\, Mikhael Subotzky\, Ilaria Magliocchetti Lombi\, Akintunde Akinleye. \n“Our change\, a commitment to the Planet” is also the leitmotif of the sixth edition of Risvegli\, the cultural and scientific event promoted every year by the University of Padua. \n“Planet Book. The exhibition” is included in the admission ticket to the Botanical Garden. Thanks to the special openings planned until 24th October\, it will be also possible to enjoy the exhibition in the fascinating nocturnal atmosphere of the Garden. \n___________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nLEAFLET – English version
