A plant used in medicine since ancient times, an infusion of the leaves known as “thé d’Europe” or “Europe tea” became popular towards the end of the 17th century as a substitute for Chinese tea. The leaves were used as a poultice on burns and wounds, while an infusion or decoction of the flowers is still used to stimulate the appetite, treat bronchitis and invigorate the body after prolonged illness.
