The Botanical Garden aims at being accessible to everyone, and with this end in view organizes specific activities, services and dedicated tools.
Free admission and special conditions
Admission to the Botanical Garden is free for disabled persons and one companion each.
Children are admitted free of charge up to 5 years of age, and up to 12 years of age if accompanied by a paying adult. The family ticket offers advantageous rates for young persons under the age of 18, as indicated on the “Tickets” page. Special rates are available for schools, and in general for different age groups.
Visitors with impaired mobility
The Botanical Garden is accessible to wheelchair users from the ticket office and onwards, and free of architectural barriers along the main avenues and in the Botanical Museum (including the Botanical Theatre, used for certain meetings), through to the new complex where the Auditorium is located. Access to the 19th-century greenhouses is limited currently by an architectural barrier of 6 steps; most parts of the Renaissance Garden are accessible to users of wheelchairs or other mobility aids, though not the historic footpaths lying within the ‘quarters’, which are too narrow.
Wheelchairs are available, but not bookable in advance: ask at the ticket office. Reserved car parking is available for the disabled: contact the Booking Centre for details of how to arrange access (by phone: +39 049 8273939 daily 09.00 to 17.00, or by email: prenotazioni@ortobotanicopd.it)
Learning and language difficulties, cognitive disabilities
An Alternative Augmentative Communication (AAC) guide to the Botanical Garden is available. This is the ideal vademecum for children with Specific Learning Disorders or cognitive difficulties, or those who have not yet learned to read and write, as well as for young people and adults who do not have Italian as their first language or are affected by cognitive disabilities and autism, but also for elderly people who need a simplified form of reading.
The AAC guide is available in digital format (Italian language).
Children and families
In addition to providing special rates, the Botanical Garden creates a friendly setting for families not least by virtue of the AudioPen tool, which helps small children get a better understanding of their visit. Most areas are accessible with pushchairs and prams, and baby change facilities are provided in the toilets of the ticket office and foyer, on the ground floor.
Access with animals
Animals are not allowed on the premises, except for guide dogs. Small dogs can be admitted only if kept in a proper pet carrier.
