St John’s wort

Still widely used as a medicinal plant, it is known as “St John’s wort” as it flowers in midsummer. In many local traditions it was believed to protect against witches and evil spirits. It is thus also known as “devil’s scourge”. The flowering specimen comes from South Tyrol, where it was collected by Zenari at Lutago in the Valle Aurina in the early 1950s.
